The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed back into distant history, in fact as far as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, ancient records were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Later, we find two books dating from the 14th Century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of food eaten by the rich and wealthy people of the time. For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich houses tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, cook books were starting to become popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having more spare time and disposable income. |
