The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes back into the far past, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were divided into starters, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he tells us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, mint and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for an increase in books on cookery, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
