The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed way back into distant history, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, in the main part, these old recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius wrote some documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius informs us how the ancient cooks used many herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today such as basil, rue and parsley. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find some interesting books dating from the 14th Century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are not about the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menus of the rich and powerful of that time. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for an increase in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private collections. The TV revolution gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
