The History of Recipes

We can read the history of written recipes far back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, these, ancient recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are some tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful.

Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also describes how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few you will know for example thyme, mint and asafoetida.

Later on, we find a couple of recipe books dating from the 1300s : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books have no connection with the indian curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of food enjoyed by the nobility of the period.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an outbreak in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in private collections.

By the advent of the twentieth century, cookbooks are highly popular mostly due to more people being able to read, leisure time and disposable income.
