1 cup quick cooking rolled oats
1/2 cup whole bran cereal
1/3 cup whole wheat flour
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ginger
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 package regular butterscotch pudding mix, 4, oz pkg.
1 1/4 cup milk
22 oz apple pie filling
1 tsp finely shredded lemon peel
2 tbsp lemon juice
Directions
Mix oats, cereal, flour, sugar, soda and spices. Cut in butter or
margarine until crumbly. Pat half the mixture into a 8x8x2 inch
baking dish. Bake in 350~ oven 10 minutes. Prepare pudding mix
according to package directions except use the 1 1/2 cups milk. Pour
over crumb layer. Mix remaining ingredients; spoon over pudding. Top
with remaining crumbs. Bake, uncovered, in 350~ oven 30 to 35
minutes. Serve warm or cool with ice cream, if desired.

The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the Roman chefs used a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few you will know such as thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Later, there are a couple of interesting cookery books published in the fourteenth century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and wealthy people of the time. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an outbreak in books on cookery, most of which still exist in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
