The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` way back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, old cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like bay, fennel and parsley. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from the East, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations created an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in private collections. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
