The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes back into history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, in the main part, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, we find a couple of interesting books which date from the 14th Century : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of the time. For the next few years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookbooks are in great demand, mostly due to better eduction, people having more leisure time and having more disposable income. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
