The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked far back into the far past, certainly as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also recounts how the Roman chefs made use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, fennel and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cooking, including parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an eruption in cookery books, some of which are now in private libraries. The TV revolution gave us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Indulgence recipe.
