The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into history, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, generally, these old recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. He also informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of a wide range of aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, mint and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the holy lands, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to a surge in recipe publications, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Meringue Loreli recipe.
