This barely sweet, fruity rye tastes good with scrambled eggs or in a

The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of written cooking instructions back into the far past, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he informs us how the Roman cooks made use of many spices, including some familiar names like bay, mint and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cooking, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to an eruption in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking publications were greatly in demand mostly due to more people being able to read, more free time and disposable income. |
