The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. However, sadly, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are a few tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Closer to modern times, there were two recipe books which were published in the 14th Century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of that period. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper classes competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down the recipes of their peers. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Pancake Deluxe recipe.
