The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions far back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, sadly, these old recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the Roman chefs made use of many different spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, mint and parsley. Over the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
