The History of Recipes
We can read the history of `recipes` way back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old records were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `blissful`. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the cooks of his times made use of many spices, including many that are still in use today like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices like basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs led to a torrent in cookery books, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe books are in high demand, due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The introduction of the TV brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
