The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also describes how the Roman chefs made use of many different aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today such as bay, mint and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from the East, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an increase in books on cookery, many of which are now in private collections. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
