The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today for example basil, mint and dill. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the East, including spices like parsley and basil. These new foods and spices created a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cook books are greatly in demand mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
