The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes way back into antiquity, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `blissful`. Closer to modern times, there were two interesting books dating from the 14th Century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and powerful. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. However, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
