The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be tracked back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of interesting books which date from the fourteenth century - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are unconnected to the curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menus of the rich and powerful of that period. When we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications are in high demand, mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money. |
