The History of Recipes

We are able to follow the history of `recipes` far back into antiquity, certainly as far as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated.

As we move on, we find a couple of cookery books which were published in the 14th Century - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the upper classes of those days.

Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and spices caused a torrent in recipe publications, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries.

During the following few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy houses competed to lay on the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

The revolution that is television gave us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site.
