The History of Recipes
We can read the history of written recipes far back into history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, mostly, these old cook books were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius recounts how the ancient cooks made use of a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, mint and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes led to an explosion in recipe publications, most of which still exist in private collections. By the advent of the twentieth century, cook books were in high demand, due to higher levels of literacy, increased leisure time and having more money to spend. The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Applesauce 'n' Spice Bread recipe.
