The History of Recipes

It is possible to read the history of `recipes` way back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, in the main part, these old recipes were just very simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he describes how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also informs us how the ancient chefs made use of a good variety of herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example bay, fennel and parsley.

For the decades that followed, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group.

The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading.
