The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes far back into distant history, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into starters, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient cooks used many aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like bay, mint and dill. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. These new spices and herbs led to a torrent in recipe books, most of which are now in private cookery archives. When we get to the 1900s, cookery books are in high demand, mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. |
