The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of `recipes` far back into history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, generally, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Later on, we find two books from the fourteenth century - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are not about the indian curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals served to the rich. For the centuries that followed, the powerful and rich houses strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording the recipes of their peers. By the time we get to the 20th century, cook books are starting to become popular due to increased literacy, people having increased free time and being a little richer. |
