The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existance of recipes way back into history, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, in the main part, these early recipes were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Moving on, we have a couple of recipe books which date from the fourteenth century ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared for the nobility of the period. During the next few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking books are highly popular mostly due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and having more money. |
