The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, mostly, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. Moving on, we have a couple of interesting books dating from the 1300s ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich and wealthy people of the time. During the following few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
