The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be observed far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians is a series of tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Later on, there were two interesting cookery books dating from the fourteenth century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are not about the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals enjoyed by the nobility of that time. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the East, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices created an increase in manuscripts on food, most of which are now in private cookery archives. For the next few years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe tried to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
