The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be tracked way back into distant history, in fact as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into starters, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including some familiar names like bay, mint and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for a surge in recipe manuscripts, the majority of which are now in academic collections. The TV revolution brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Asinan (Sweet & Sour Cucumber Salad) recipe.
