The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found far back into the far past, at least as far back into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find some recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are not about the curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich people of that period. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an increase in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. The arrival of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Asinan (Sweet & Sour Cucumber Salad) recipe.
