The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to prove the history of written cooking instructions way back into antiquity, in truth as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, these, early cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.

In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated.

Later on, there were two interesting recipe books which date from the 14th Century : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menus of the rich and powerful of the period.

For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day.

By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery publications are increasing in popularity mostly due to increased literacy, people having more spare time and having more money.

The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site.
