The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes back into the far past, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are some ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Moving on, we have some books from the 14th Century - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich and powerful of those days. During the following few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The revolution that is television brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
