The History of Recipes

Experts have proved the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.

Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful.

As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of interesting cookery books which date from the 1300s - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of that period.

In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to an explosion in cookery books, some of which are kept safe in private collections.

Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day.

The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site.
