The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes way back into history, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into appetizers, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient Romans used many herbs, including a few you will know such as bay, fennel and dill. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an increase in books on cookery, most of which still exist in private libraries. The revolution that is television brings us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
