The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. As we move on, we have a couple of recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared for the rich and wealthy people of those days. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe competed to serve the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books were highly popular due to increased literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money. |
