The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many spices and herbs, including a few you will know like thyme, rue and asafoetida. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery books were highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased free time and disposable income. The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
