1 lb halibut -or- turbot fillets, fresh, or frozen
1 small onion
1 slice bread, crumbled
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper, ground
1 egg
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 onion, sliced
1 sweet green pepper, chopped
8 oz can tomato sauce
Directions
Defrost the fish, if frozen. Grind the fish and onion in a food
processor. Add the bread, salt, pepper and egg. Mix well. Shape into
12 balls.
Combine the oil, onion, green pepper and tomato sauce in a baking
dish. Arrange the fish balls in it, cover, and bake in a 325-degree
oven for 40 to 45 minutes. Baste with the sauce before serving.

The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existence of recipes back into the distant past, at least as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, generally, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. He also recounts how the early Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise like basil, fennel and parsley. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the holy lands, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused an explosion in books on cooking, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
