1 lb halibut -or- turbot fillets, fresh, or frozen
1 small onion
1 slice bread, crumbled
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper, ground
1 egg
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 onion, sliced
1 sweet green pepper, chopped
8 oz can tomato sauce
Directions
Defrost the fish, if frozen. Grind the fish and onion in a food
processor. Add the bread, salt, pepper and egg. Mix well. Shape into
12 balls.
Combine the oil, onion, green pepper and tomato sauce in a baking
dish. Arrange the fish balls in it, cover, and bake in a 325-degree
oven for 40 to 45 minutes. Baste with the sauce before serving.

The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed far back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he informs us how the chefs of Roman times used a wide range of herbs, including some familiar names such as thyme, rue and dill. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused an increase in recipe books, many of which are now in private collections. The arrival of TV gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
