The History of Recipes

Food historians have proved the existence of recipes far back into antiquity, at least as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.

As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also tells us how the chefs of Roman times made use of many spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, mint and parsley.

Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for an explosion in manuscripts on food, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

By the advent of the 20th century, cookery books are in great demand, mostly as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and having more money to spend.
