The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to trace the history of recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, in the main part, these ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.

As we move into Roman times 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of many spices, including a few you will know like basil, fennel and asafoetida.

During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe competed to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books were highly popular due to more people being able to read, people having more spare time and having more money.
