The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find two interesting books from the 1300s ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they have no connection with the curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich and powerful of those days. When we get to the twentieth century, cookbooks are in high demand, due to higher levels of literacy, leisure time and disposable income. |
