The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of written recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius recounts how the ancient Romans used a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, rue and dill. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for an outbreak in books on cookery, many of which are now in academic collections. By the time we get to the 20th century, recipe books are in high demand, mostly as a result of more people being able to read, more spare time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
