The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, generally, these early records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient cooks made use of many different aromatic flavors, including some familiar names such as thyme, mint and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an increase in manuscripts on food, some of which are now in private libraries. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
