The History of Recipes

We can trace the history of `recipes` back into the distant past, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, ancient records were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful.

Later on, there are a couple of interesting recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared for the nobility of that period.

For the next few years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to lay on the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group.

By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe publications were in high demand, due to better eduction, people having increased spare time and having more money.
