The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed way back into ancient history, at least as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, in the main part, these old recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated.

Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have a couple of interesting books which were published in the 1300s : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of those days.

Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing the recipes of their peers.

When we get to the twentieth century, cooking publications are in high demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, leisure time and having more money.
