The History of Recipes
We can read the history of written recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the cooks of Roman times used a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few you will know for example thyme, rue and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new culinary innovations led to an outbreak in cookery books, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookbooks are starting to become popular as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased spare time and having more disposable income. |
