The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed far back into ancient history, at least as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, these, old records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius describes how the Romans used a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, mint and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused an increase in recipe manuscripts, some of which are now in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
