The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, sadly, these old recipes were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving on, there were a couple of interesting cookery books published in the 14th Century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of food served to the upper classes. During the following few centuries, the upper classes tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
