The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed far back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these ancient records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into starters, main course and afters, something we still use today. He also informs us how the Roman cooks used many different aromatic flavours, including some familiar names such as thyme, mint and dill. Closer to modern times, we find a couple of books published in the 14th Century ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are not about the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of that time. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from the holy land, such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in cookery books, most of which still exist in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
