The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found far back into the far past, in fact as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, in the main part, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find some books from the 1300s : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of those days. When we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were greatly in demand due to increased literacy, increased leisure time and being a little richer. |
