The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius wrote some documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. He tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the chefs of Roman times made use of a wide range of aromatic flavours, including a few you will know such as basil, rue and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as parsley and basil. These new culinary innovations prompted an increase in recipe publications, some of which still exist in private libraries. The TV revolution gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
