The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked back into history, certainly as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, mostly, these ancient recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of cookery books from the 14th Century : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich people of the time. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes led to a surge in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private collections. The TV revolution brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
