The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also recounts how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like basil, fennel and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices caused a surge in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. When we get to the twentieth century, cook books were starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, more free time and a general increase in wealth. The TV revolution gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
