The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of `recipes` way back into the distant past, at least as far into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these old records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he recounts how the early Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs, including a few you will know like thyme, mint and parsley. During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe competed to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
