Directions
Heat oven to 350. Grease bottom ONLY of 8-inch square pan.
Melt in 2-quart saucepan, over low heat, stirring constantly; 1/2
stick butter (1/4 cup) 1 pkg. (6 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate
chips Beat in thoroughly with spoon; 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2
teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/3 cup
chopped walnuts 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup mashed ripe banana 1 egg
(about 1 small) Spread batter evenly in pan. Bake about 30 minutes or
until center is set. Cut into 2-inch squares.

The History of Recipes
We can read the history of `recipes` back into the far past, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, these, ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also describes how the chefs of Roman times used many different spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. For the next few years, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
