The History of Recipes

We are able to follow the history of written recipes far back into history, at least as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius describes how the cooks of Roman times used many different spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like thyme, rue and parsley.

As we move on, we find some recipe books published in the fourteenth century ; a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared for the rich and wealthy people of that period.

Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from Arab cooking, including rosemary and coriander. These new foods and spices led to an eruption in publications on food, most of which are kept safe in private libraries.

By the time we get to the 1900s, cook books are in great demand, as a result of more people being able to read, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth.
