The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` far back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, mostly, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Later, we find a couple of interesting recipe books dating from the 1300s - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of that period. For the decades that followed, the powerful and wealthy houses competed with each other to lay on the best banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day. The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
