The History of Recipes

We can track the history of written recipes back into antiquity, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, these, old cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated.

As we move on, we find two books which were published in the 1300s - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of those days.

During the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy houses strove to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the advent of the 20th century, cook books are starting to become popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, more free time and disposable income.

The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this site.
