The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `wonderful`. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef recounts how the ancient Romans made use of many different aromatic flavors, including some familiar names such as basil, fennel and parsley. During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent meals, and because of this chefs and their recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
