The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be observed way back into antiquity, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, generally, these old cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were some books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are not about the curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich people of that time. Over the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to serve up the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group. The arrival of TV brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
