The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of `recipes` back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move on, there are a couple of books dating from the 1300s : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful of that time. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of the West strove to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking books were starting to become popular due to more people being able to read, more spare time and being a little richer. |
