The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, generally, these ancient recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into starters, main course and afters, something we still use today. Additionally, he describes how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise for example bay, mint and dill. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are kept safe in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
